Ancestry Review

Ancestry is the big daddy in genealogy terms, with more records than anyone else. A US company that has expanded globally to cover other countries as well as their own. Is that a good thing? Well, they have the money to purchase huge chunks of data from The National Archives for example, so it’s a quick way of getting lots of data out there, on the other hand they wont be country centric like some of the smaller sites, so may miss some of the smaller finer detail information a niche site can cater for.

What records do they have?

If you’re just starting our with your family tree its a good starting place. They have the BMD (Births, Deaths and Marriages) data, census data and tons of other records. The only issue we have with the initial records is that we feel their search facilty could be better, as it feels quite cluttered.

Military Records

If you’re looking for records of your military ancestors, once again Ancestry do have quite a few, however they do feel like an after thought and so you may be better served getting these from other sites such as Forces War Records who specifically deal with only military records as the name suggests. They also have lots of supplementary military data, you’ll never find on the larger sites that deal with all types of records.
